Clay H. Sneller Department of Agronomy, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR 72701. Present address: Ohio Ag Resources and Development Center, Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, 1680 Madison Ave., Wooster, OH 44691 Red rice is a major weed in rice production in the southern United States. Red rice and rice intercross because they are the same species. Our objectives were to determine the genetic diversity represented by accessions of red rice and to identify DNA markers that might be useful in identifying hybrids between red and cultivated rice. Red rice accessions were collected from Arkansas and other rice-producing states. Seventy-nine red rice accessions, 10 known or putative hybrid derivatives of red rice and cultivated rice (RC hybrids), and seven rice cultivars were analyzed using microsatellite DNA markers developed for cultivated rice. Microsatellite markers differentiated awned and awnless red rice accessions, six of the seven rice cultivars, and all 10 RC hybrids tested. Thus, these markers were useful in identifying red rice types and RC hybrids.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most significant cereal crops, about 3 billion people, nearly half the world's population; depend on rice for survival and it offers up to 80% of daily energy intake in most of the Asian countries. Knowledge of the distribution, extent and pattern of genetic variation is useful for estimation of any possible loss of genetic diversity and its role in breeding...
متن کاملGenetic diversity analysis of recombinant inbred lines of rice (Oryza sativa L.) using microsatellite markers
Estimation of genetic diversity is an important factor in germplasm conservation and characterization. In rice breeding programs, genetic diversity information on specific regions of genome can be very useful for the application of marker assisted selection (MAS) and for gene mapping. A total of 152 rice lines were considered for breeding programs using microsatellites (SSR) technique. The tota...

Breeding of rice for drought tolerance requires proper evaluation and analysis of genetic diversity in breeding populations related to drought tolerance. In order to identify indices for tolerant and sensitive rice genotypes to drought stress, an experiment with 59 genotypes of rice was conducted based of a complete block design with three replications in non-stressed (flooding) and stressed co...
متن کاملGrouping of Rice Genotypes Based on Grain Iron, Zinc, Manganese and Protein and Performance Measurement of Linked Microsatellite Markers
In order to select the best parents for crossings, plant breeders seek varieties or genotypes with highest genetic dissimilarities. This can be achieved by measuring the similarities among genotypes, using multivariate analysis methods such as cluster analysis. This study aimed to group 50 aerobic and lowland rice genotypes based on biochemical characteristics including Iron, Zinc, Manganese an...

DNA fingerprinting has become an important tool for diversity assessment and varietal identification in plant breeding programs. Semi- random PCR primers targeting intron-exon splice junctions (ISJ) were used to evaluate the potential of these markers in identification and classification of rice genotypes. A total of 12 ISJ primers were used for screening fourteen Egyptian rice genotypes, inclu...
